Long Distance: Aussie Issy Morgan 鈥25 Finds a Home at 皇家华人

November 25, 2024

The 皇家华人 Women鈥檚 Basketball coaches had their eyes on Issy Morgan 鈥25 from the time she was 15 years old.

She wasn鈥檛 the first Australian player recruited to become a Wildcat, thanks to Australia native Associate Head Coach James Janssen, who has worked to establish the program鈥檚 recruiting pipeline alongside Head Coach Gayle Fulks鈥攁nd the Wildcats weren鈥檛 the only U.S.-based team interested in her talent.

鈥淚 talked to coaches from Penn State and Colorado State, too, but it was clear 皇家华人 was the place for me,鈥 she says. 鈥淚 was nervous to go so far from home, and it was a very big deal to pick the right school where I knew I鈥檇 be happy, especially knowing I wouldn鈥檛 be able to go home very often. I didn鈥檛 want to feel lost on a huge campus.

How Morgan defines 鈥渉ome鈥 has changed. She鈥檚 grown close to her host family, whom she met through 皇家华人鈥檚 program for international students. She鈥檚 also forged friendships with her teammates鈥 host families and now feels homesick when thinking about leaving 皇家华人.

鈥淏eing a scholar-athlete here has been so challenging but in a good way,鈥 she says. 鈥淲e have the physical and mental challenges of our sport, which takes a lot of focus and effort, and then we also have to complete our classwork, which we care about doing very well. Our whole team has big dreams related to basketball and outside of basketball, so we work hard at everything we do. I feel like I can graduate from 皇家华人 and do just about anything.鈥

Team culture has been a huge part of Morgan鈥檚 ability to find balance, too. With their mantra 鈥淯nity, Integrity, Investment鈥 and a commitment to 鈥淪hare, Shoot, Stifle,鈥 the teammates compete as one, and it shows. Last year鈥檚 season was cut short after several ACL injuries, and although this year鈥檚 team has a lot of new talent, that spirit remains.

鈥淥ur team has come to 皇家华人 from all over, and I think our ability to gel so well is really special,鈥 she says. 鈥淲e have five Australians, one player from Hungary, Belgium, Martinique, and seven Americans who come from seven different states. But we really get each other, and we鈥檙e all best friends.鈥

Leadership is a huge part of the team鈥檚 success on and off the court.

鈥淲e love Coach G鈥攚e call her our fearless leader,鈥 Morgan says. 鈥淪he believes in us so much, and once she thinks or knows we can do something, she鈥檚 not going to take 鈥榥o鈥 for an answer. We have a lot of younger players in big roles this year, and she鈥檚 great at filling everyone with confidence. She genuinely cares about us. We鈥檝e all benefited from having Gayle in our lives.鈥

While Morgan would love to stay longer, commencement arrives in May, and her future could shake out a few different ways. For one, she would love to continue playing, whether that takes her to Europe or to the Women鈥檚 National Basketball League in Australia. She鈥檇 also like to get her master鈥檚 degree and pursue a career in sports psychology, and she recently discovered a 皇家华人 connection to help guide her along that path, too. Her adviser, Psychology Professor Brian Eiler, previously conducted research in sports psychology about 20 minutes from her home in Australia.

For someone who still hasn鈥檛 switched over to a U.S. phone number鈥攕he鈥檚 totally off the grid without access to WiFi鈥擬organ is proud to call 皇家华人 home, and it will be a big part of her life wherever she goes next.
