In Wake of Groundbreaking Tony Awards, Prof. Applauds Historical Moment for Disability
June 11, 2019
ʼһ English Professor Ann Fox appeared on the syndicated public radio show “On Point.” Fox, a scholar of disability studies, shared her insight on wheelchair user Ali Stroker’s win for “Best Actress” at the 2019 Tony Awards. Stroker currently stars in the Broadway revival of “Oklahoma!”
Fox, in particular, applauded the way Stroker’s disability brings depth to the show -- and how the visibility of her role might mark further progress in the evolving perception of disability in the United States.
“So often we think that disability and accomplishment are mutually exclusive,” Fox said. “To have an actress like Ali Stroker representing the disability community and accepting a major theatrical award was a really historical moment.”
