Standout Students Win 2018 Awards

Lily Sanford from Norwalk, Connecticut, was this year's recipient of the W. Kendrick Pritchett Award in Classics. The award is named for a »Ê¼Ò»ªÈË graduate from the class of 1929 who became a distinguished professor of classics at the University of California, Berkeley. The award goes to a senior who show the characteristics for which Pritchett was known: distinguished academic performance, personal integrity, and love of ancient literature, history and archaeology.

"Lily has exemplified the characteristics of the Pritchett award, particularly in her outstanding academic performance, her work as an AT (apprentice teacher), and her enthusiasm for all things classical. She really became a role model in the department," said department chair Peter Krentz.

Emma Brentjens '21, from Edenton, North Carolina, won the Outstanding Student Award from the Society for Classical Studies. The award goes to the first- or second-year student who does best in the major gateway CLA 111 class.

Addison Sharp '21, from Jackson, Mississippi, received a Classical Association of the Middle West & South (CAMWS) Award for Outstanding Accomplishment in Classical Studies. This award goes to the top student in elementary Greek. A second CAMWS Award for Outstanding Accomplishment in Classical Studies, given to the top first-year student in elementary or intermediate Latin, went to Mitchell Stanek '21 from Asheville, North Carolina.

Catherine Johnson '20, from Orlando, Florida, won the 2018 CAMWS Advanced Latin Translation Contest, an anonymously graded test taken by 196 college students in the U.S. and Canada.

Harrison Dinsbeer '21, from Fleming Island, Florida, received a certificate of commendation for scoring in the top 25 percent in the same contest.
