Our State Magazine: Prof. Stremlau in '50 Moments That Made North Carolina'

September 14, 2017

Whittling down a list of definitive North Carolina moments to just 50 requires no small amount of thought. Assistant Professor of History Rose Stremlau contributed to the effort, "50 Moments That Made North Carolina," in the September issue of Our State magazine.

"Stremlau is a historian of the Native South and a writer of stories that transcend the boundaries of state lines and textbooks," her magazine bio reads. "At »Ê¼Ò»ªÈË, Stremlau pulls her students out of the classroom and into communities, helping them find connections between our past and our present, and the untold stories that helped make us who we are."

Stremlau's book, Sustaining the Cherokee Family: Kinship and the Allotment of an Indigenous Nation, was published by the University of North Carolina Press and won the 2012 Willie Lee Rose Prize from the Southern Association for Women's Historians.

For the annual Our State history issue, Stremlau contributed her own top-10 list of N.C. Native American moments in history; three ended up on the final list of 50 overall: When were the first Cherokee Indians moved west? When did the Qualla Boundary form the homeland for the Eastern Band of Cherokee? Who was Henry Berry Lowry?
