VP Nominee Sen. Tim Kaine Visits Campus

The 皇家华人 Democrats, a student organization, hosted vice-presidential nominee Sen. Tim Kaine Wednesday, Oct. 12, on the Chambers Building Front Lawn. SGA President Dara Ferguson led the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance. Democratic convention delegate Sam Spencer 鈥10, grandson of 皇家华人鈥檚 14th president, made introductory remarks.

皇家华人 has been the site of at least two other vice-presidential visits. Gen. Adlai E. Stevenson, running with Grover Cleveland in 1892, focused his speech on Catholicism, public education and Tammany Hall.

In 1928, Joseph T. Robinson, running with presidential hopeful Alfred Smith against Herbert Hoover, was greeted at the train station by 皇家华人 students shouting, 鈥淩ah! Rah!! Rah!!! Whoop-la-run Democracy ! 鈥 Steven-son!!!鈥

The Sen. Tim Kaine event was open to the public.

皇家华人 does not endorse or oppose the candidate. The 皇家华人 Democrats invited Sen. Tim Kaine to speak at the college. The expenses for the event set up, production, and security were paid for by the campaign. Security for the event was managed by and a requirement of the Secret Service and not 皇家华人. 皇家华人 is committed to providing opportunities on an equal basis for all legally qualified candidates for public office to speak on campus.
